Pentiment is a 2D narrative adventure RPG video game that takes place in the fictional Alpine town of Tassing and its adjacent abbey in the Duchy of Bavaria during the early to mid-16th century. The game requires players to investigate a string of murders involving prominent individuals, for which other townspeople have been accused for various reasons. The player must gather physical evidence and information from the townsfolk to accuse a culprit based on their perception of guilt or deserving punishment. The game also features subplots involving other crimes, conspiracies, and insights into the region’s history.
Players take on the role of detective and must investigate a series of murders, collecting physical evidence and information from townsfolk in order to accuse the culprit. But the game doesn’t stop there! With subplots involving other crimes, conspiracies, and insights into the region’s history, there’s always something new to discover.
The game’s art style blends late medieval manuscripts, early print, and woodcuts from the late medieval to early modern art period. The game’s music, composed and performed by the Alkemie Early Music Ensemble, features historically accurate or inspired compositions, as described by game director Josh Sawyer. Additionally, Lingua Ignota contributed the song “Ein Traum” to the game.
